The Evolution of the Nigerians' Voice

Nigerians have been known to be in the press for a number of reasons, good and bad: their love of football and export of this treasured skills, their economic contribution to the western economy albeit at a price of leaving behind their beloved homeland and emigrating in high quantities, their supply of precious oil, the high level of corruption, fraud etc (need I say more).

Nigerians have neither been happy with the state of affairs within their homeland nor the perception of the outside world with regards to their tolerance of the mismanagement, incompetence and lack of consideration by the relative minority being granted their trust to run the affairs of the state. Although they continuously express their distaste of the way the country has been run to-date, they have never seemed to either make their voice coherent or strong.

In recent weeks, the Government announced the withdrawal of the fuel subsidy granted to ease the burden of the cost of fuel supply to its citizens and Nigerians as usual were led by the Labour Union to embark on a strike action to make their displeasure known to the Government. This could have been a business-as-usual strike action of no clear message being spoken on behalf of the people and violence unleashed where possible by an idle few but it certainly wasn't the case. Nigerians gathered in their thousands in strategic locations to speak in clear terms with a united voice on their displeasure and anger at the Government's treatment of the resources very precious yet scarce to its people.

Demonstrations were staged in major locations across the city with speeches, encouraging words and music provided by notable artists. The mood was heavy with criticism of the mismanagement of the country's resources over the last few decades but it was tinged with a sense of togetherness and camaraderie of a people dealing with the impact of the Government's decisions on the future of its people.

Nigerians are ready to stand up in one accord using their voices and creative expressions to stand against irresponsible politicians, leaders and government officials. The Government needs to address the continued lack of consistently functioning infrastructure, electricity, competitively priced fuel, quality education, economic growth and development, and fight against growing terrorism. I applaud Nigerians for a peaceful yet effective protest and activism and I hope to show more of these images as they evolve and their voices grow stronger, more powerful and life-changing.

Whilst the activism was going on and Nigerians were protesting the removal of the subsidy, it was business (commercial business that is) for some. Isn't it something to see and understand that Nigerians will never cease to trade, work, or earn an income under any circumstance. This fighter instinct is what keeps the people going regardless of the turmoil and strife around them.

The rest of the world could certainly learn a thing or two.

Today is the global KEY2FREE day where everyone around the globe takes a stand against human trafficking and 21st century slave trade. People around the world are wearing symbols of a key which stands for the freedom of one person from captivity and enslavement.

It is hard to fathom or comprehend that there is still actively a slave trade market going on in the world around us. Statistics currently show that there are 27 MILLION people being trafficked around the world today. As I type away at my keyboard, a girl is being sold into the sex trade industry or being trafficked for monetary gain.

It is easy to sit there and think, it is far removed from your lifestyle and surroundings however, it has become apparent that human trafficking can occur from the most innocuous of situations and can happen to your sister, friend, cousin, or relative.

A classic example of how close this is, can be garnered from the story of Natalia, a rescued victim. She went out on a blind date with a guy introduced to her by her friends. While she was in the restroom, he drugged her drink and she was thrown into his trunk and trafficked across the world. Her life was never the same after that one date.

Human trafficking can happen to a boy or girl, look around you and see the injustice taking place in the 21st Century. Stand against the enslavement and trafficking of human beings and take a step towards fighting this act of crime. Everywhere around you, services are being provided to you by victims of human trafficking, someone somewhere could be actively participating in human trafficking, or someone is ignoring an obvious act of human trafficking. Report any suspicious activities, support the fight against this heinous crime, or spread awareness of this crime to prevent someone close to you becoming a victim.

The Battle of the Wardrobe

I seriously have to share this thought with you guys.

So, yesterday my colleague had a go at me for looking slightly too casual next to her. I look at myself in my short black dress, knee-length boots and thick cardigan (seriously, the facilities team need to remove the bloody air conditioning system. Who needs an air conditioning system in this country?) and retort at her, what do you know about looking good. It wasn't a fair reply but I had to get my two cents in (and besides she knows I have lots of time for her).

Anyway, I got thinking about my first years as a worker and the overload on tailored shirts, slinky slim skirts (I was too skinny back then), and heeled pumps. it was a repetitive look and an expensive one to maintain on my meagre income.

Fast forward a few years and my creative side surfaces with no interest in strictly formal office wear, I am all about the shift dresses (knee-length of course), feminine blouses, frilly skirts, and funky footwear. Who's complaining?

The UK office environment is all about the "formal casual" with the emphasis on casual and it suits my mood and personality just fine. What would I have done if I hadn't discovered this side of the world? Beats me, haha.

So here's my final say on the debate, discover yourself and dress to it. Spend less money demarcating your wardrobe into work vs weekend and ride the boundary train, just don't get fired for looking like a slob.

My friend needs a few tips on styling and she's going to get it. She's reading this right now and ready to give me a comeback. Can't wait.

If you haven't noticed the wedge boots fever gripping Europe, I don't know about the rest of the world and we lead the pack anyway (don't shoot the messenger), then you need to get out there and pay attention. I am seriously hounding the Nordstrom website for this Jeffery Campbell pair of boots but I have a seriously "can't wait to wear pair" from a UK store so I'm holding back.

Seriously, temperatures inside and outside buildings in London are below my comfort level and this Cardigan from Zara cannot be overstated, it is helping a LOT.

This is me, the budget-watching student telling you to look too cool for school (if you can figure out how).

Change of Direction

I have been away for a few months rethinking my principles, values, and passions in life. It has been a dramatic year so far and as it winds down, I am looking forward to sharing a lot more with you on my blog.

As a foreigner (not entirely true, but it feels like it) trying to build a career in the UK, it has been a roller coaster ride. Who ever knew that building a career would take more than an undergraduate/postgraduate degree and a crash course in likeability. It takes sweat, tears, evaluations, abrupt changes, focus, and a whole lot more, including for me, a close reliance on God, to stay sane and keep going on a chosen path to build a solid career. It would be interesting to hear what other professionals have to share on their climb to the so-called top?

As an unmarried woman in her thirties, it's another story entirely trying to keep it together emotionally. Can I despise the freedom and time to pursue my own interests and dreams without interruption or compromise, not really. However, how would I feel to have the shoe on the other foot, that would be interesting to see and only time will tell whether you'll have the opportunity to laugh at my expense while I try the "so-called" shoe.

As a student engaging in adult education, I can definitely confirm that the older you get, the less enthusiastic schools sounds or feels (don't tell your kids that when you are scolding them about their grades on the other hand). Sometimes I ask myself, what were you thinking?

In the mean-time, it feels good to be back and therapeutic to talk about the issues most people keep off their public profiles.

I'm a music buff and avid listener to Nigerian music every time I get the chance. I walked into a stall at the British Museum (yes you heard me right, British Museum) and heard 'Omo Pupa o' playing in the background and was so excited, I almost embarrassed myself. I bought the last copy of the highlife music album being played and cant believe how old this music is.

How much more excited was I to find a resurgence of Nigerian classics from the 1980s being reproduced and hitting the media with Wale's 'My Sweetie' and DMSquared's 'Nigeria go survive'.

I got a chance to touch base with a good friend and talented Nigerian rapper, DMSquared as he passed through London en route to Nigeria and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to get a personal scoop:

Viva La Stylish Living: It's been a while since I got the chance to say hello, how's music treating you?

DMSquared: Let me put it this way, I am treating music well. and music has been amazing to me.

Viva La Stylish Living: Has the Nigerian music industry been receptive?

DMSquared: I have received a lot of positive reviews. The Nigerian music industry is very competitive and I try to hold my own by not entering into competition with anyone. The experience I had working with Outtatown has served me well. I have my own unique sound for a specific target market. I cater to people who have a taste for good music telling a with a story behind it giving a positive vibe yet having a swell time.

Viva La Stylish Living: What is DMSquared up to right now?

DMSquared: I am working with a company called TDC which has evolved into Ma-Ya music. I am currently running independently and entirely self-funded. It's worked out for me so far.

Viva La Stylish Living: What does the term 'Ma-Ya' mean or stand for?

DMSquared: Ma-Ya simply means anything positive. For instance, if you are having a conversation with someone who is stating big dreams and aspirations, you respond by saying 'You too dey Ma-Ya' or you can compliment someone wearing a nice dress by saying 'Your dress too Ma-Ya'. It's my street slang for hyping anything positive or at a level higher than anyone else.

Viva La Stylish Living: You have a song called 'Ma-Ya' don't you? What's the public reaction to the term?

DMSquared: Yes I do have a song called 'Ma-Ya' and people have been receptive to the term and the meaning behind it. It feels good to hear it picking up on the streets of Lagos.

Viva La Stylish Living: I have noticed that you've been playing a few gigs lately, how's that going?

DMSquared: I have been lucky enough to get the opportunity to play a few great gigs especially performing 'Nigeria go Survive' at the Presidential Villa for Nigeria's 50th Independence Day celebration. I have a video out for the song and it has been well-received so far. However, I am more interested in seeing the impact of my songs on the people who listen to them, not for the fame and fortune, I am all for a Ma-Ya legacy with a timeless lifespan on my songs. I want to have the kind of impact Sunny Ade and Ebenezer Obey had back in the day and still have now when their songs get played.

Viva La Stylish Living: If you had a wild card opportunity to collaborate with any artist in Nigeria, who would it be?

DMSquared: I would have loved to collaborate with the Late Da Grin (RIP). He was a great rapper with a great delivery and he had the tenacity to rise from adversity to become a successful artist. His life was cut too short. Currently, in Nigeria I would love to work with a group called New Wine. Internationally I would love to work with Kanye West, Lil Wayne, and Will.I.Am.

Viva La Stylish Living: I love Da Grin and was bowled over by his ability to merge the Nigerian Yoruba language & culture into his rap music. He definitely had a powerful delivery. I am totally addicted to Kanye's latest album so I'm with you on the collaboration choice.

Viva La Stylish Living: There has been an influx of new music on the Nigerian scene lately with new music being produced by the hour and new talent (or non-talent) popping up everywhere, what do you think about that?

DMSquared: The digital era of music has made it easier to put out new material. in addition to this, there's a lot of talent available to be heard. Nigeria has a musical culture with lots of musicians and people who play a variety of instruments and they want to be seen and heard. There's a lot of talent out there and there is a slot for everyone in the industry.

Viva La Stylish Living: What do you miss by being back in Nigeria?

DMSquared: The weather's extremely hot, and car traffic isn't lightening up. Home is home really. I have a line in a song I'm writing now which states "Naija, that's my heart. I feel her, she ain't pretty but I still feel her". Nigeria can be likened to a girl you're dating, who's not obviously pretty but you love her nonetheless. The relationship with Nigeria goes beyond the physical outlook. Nigeria is ill in a lot of ways but you decide to stick it out and live there trying to make your mark and make a difference.

Viva La Stylish Living: Ha ha, it kills me to agree with that analogy because I am a woman but I love it and agree with you. Nigeria is not for the squeamish at heart. Only the strongest survive.

Viva La Stylish Living: I lose a lot of respect for artists who don't have any social consciousness or conscience, so bearing that in mind, what's your opinion on the state of events in Nigeria particularly the forthcoming elections?

DMSquared: I don't dabble in political conversations because everyone knows the problems with Nigeria and there's no use reiterating the same point over and over again. It's better to proffer solutions and make a change. I'm going to play my part by voting for my choice of candidate. However, I will say that we want change and we hope the election process goes smoothly and democracy wins at the end of the day. I'll encourage everyone to vote and hope every vote counts exactly as they are cast. Nigerians should elect the candidates of their choice and let their votes speak for them.

Viva La Stylish Living: What's at the top of your playlist at the moment?

DMSquared: Wale's 'Nike Boots' is top of my list, I love his mixtape and I'm feeling him right now. I am following Drake and the Young Money crew especially 'Right above it'. Keri Hilson's 'Pretty Girls Rock'. I stumbled upon a Nigerian Artist called Pastor J on the Internet, and like his music. I also like the Rooftop MCs. Kanye and Akon make my playlist too.

Viva La Stylish Living: I love 9ice's second album 'Tradition', I could play it over and over again.

Viva La Stylish Living: What's next for DMSquared and the Ma-Ya movement?

DMSquared: The album is doing okay so far for a first effort but I am looking forward to the next six months producing some results. I am new to the Nigerian music scene so I am pleased with the reception so far. I am holding my own with the fans getting to know me and I hope to get into the international scene at some point in the future. Watch this space.

Some girls lie awake wondering how to get that new look, or jazz up a boring wardrobe, or keep up with the Joneses next door especially in these hard financial times. I bear good news from a tried and tested adventurous way of achieving any of these goals.

It's called Swapping, in other words, using your fashionable unwanted items to buy yourselves new and trendy threads.

I got tired of having under-utilised (yet in very good condition) clothing and accessories around the house knowing that I fancied myself a specific item or two on my fashion wish list. So I took to the web (my best friend), and did some digging. I had two goals, no cash currency involved, and it had to be an item I specifically wanted and needed. I ended up on three swap websites http://www.bigwardrobe.com, http://www.whatsmineisyours.com, and http://www.covertcandy.com.

Swap websites help you offload your unwanted stuff in exchange for items you truly desire, without breaking the bank or in some cases, even opening your purse. In my case, my branded items needed to fetch me a vintage clutch or a beautiful day dress and it had to be equivalent in value. However, most members of swap websites are not particular about having exact value items exchanged. I have to admit that I bagged myself a vintage LV Clutch, a brand new summer jacket gift for someone, a new day dress (which turned out not to be my size so I need to offload to a petite lady somewhere), and some other bits and pieces.

If you are looking for or have: new and used clothing, books, CDs, household items, un-opened make up, accessories, shoes etc, this is a fantastic avenue to turn your items into your new-found currency for items or services you need. Some swap sites offer goods in exchange for services.

Before you turn out to be a cynic, a misguided convert, or a snob, there are a few tips I need to share:

You need to know what you want or what you are looking for, don't become an undisciplined shopper or hoarder.
Don't swap for something of no value/worth/quality, for example, I don't understand why anyone would swap for an item from Primark. Some swappers offer items form low value stores and are looking for luxury items in exchange, its called being gullible.
know your stuff, authentic or copy/knock-off. Don't be fooled by designer names and labels. Ask questions from the seller where you are unclear, because if the seller gives you false answers, you can pursue a case of false advertisement (if you can track them down, and the site owners are able to help).
make sure you educate yourself on the store value of the item you are swapping for in relation to yours as some swappers over-value their items in order to get away with a better deal.
ensure you read the terms and conditions of the site you use to avoid any surprises, for example, some sites offer help where a swap-napping (this is where a swapper falls to send you your item after you agree a swap) occurs and some sites might not have any protection in place for their members.
always send your item by recorded delivery for your own protection.
if you receive an item you do not like in its physical state, do not hesitate to re-swap with a third party.
start off with safe items before you move on to swapping with your luxury items.
nothing is insignificant (except clothing from Primark). Un-opened perfumes, make-up, UNUSED underwear, books, skilled services (hairdressers, barbers, teachers), jewelry, handbags etc.

I have found the experience fun albeit with a few hiccups here and there, and have no regrets (except with an unwanted pair of BCBG Pumps). I have parted with a few luxury items and a few high street ones, but enjoyed the experiment. I still have a wardrobe that needs unloading but that can wait.

My Top Summer Must-Haves

Over the last year, I have shared my fashion diary with you with spates of tales about my escapades and little bits of opinion here and there.

It's summer 2009 and the weather's been great so far. I've had the chance to grab a few trips particularly to New York, Paris, and Luxembourg. My fave was New York especially with the Bloomingdale Brown Bag sale being on at the time I was there. The financial downturn is still on but there are a few must-haves to get me going for the summer:

The Marc by Marc Jacobs canvas tote line is my fave right now. It's handy for having all your essentials with you wherever you are yet cute and making a statement.

I'm trying to brush up on my swimming skills right now and the one-piece suits work for my body-type. This Dorothy Perkins swimsuit has caught my attention and is a bargain for looking good and enjoying the summer activities.

Nine West is the go-to shoe store for their colourful sling-backs and pumps. Comfortable for work and wonderful for day-to-night look necessary for simmering summer days.
A must-have accessory for the summer is the boyfriend blazer. I managed to grab a beautiful Tommy Hilfiger Blazer in New York but couldn't resist this jacket when I stumbled upon it in a store in Soho.

I bought myself a Marc Ekco limited edition wristwatch reminiscent of this in 2008 but since then every wristwatch maker has released a version of this wristwatch and it's become a hit on the female circuit.
Combo dresses have been an ultimate statement for the last two seasons and has certainly become more colourful this summer. I am addicted to combo dresses and try to resist stocking up my wardrobe with an entire line of them. This dress by Aqua as stocked by Bloomingdales hits the right buttons for me.

Having an healthy glow is important in the summer and seeing as I don't need a tan, having a bronzed look is just as important. The Mac bronzing powder holds centre stage in my make-up routine

Gladiator sandals are constantly evolving and now moreso with loud splashes of colour. This pair from Kurt Geiger are fab and loud.

Even with all the outdoor activities available to get stuck in, I've still managed to grab some time to watch the Koko Mansion reality show commissioned by D-banj. I have some opinions and mixed feelings about the show. I'm sure I'll share them with you all here so let's get started. Watch this space.

He's Just Not That Into You - Official Trailer 2009

I caught this trailer and decided to get the book before watching the movie (yeah I love cheesy movies). Anyway, I am utterly (and every emotion in between) in love with this book (and the liberation it brings). And in true self-liberated fashion, I am going to catch the movie when it gets out and enjoy every bit of it (even though I know it will come with some bits of poetic licence).

If you are curious about the title 'He is just not into you', get the book and feed your curiosity. You will get a free bargain of self-revelation and probably some insight into the weird behaviours and attitudes of some of the men you have been meeting.

The Book runs a man's perspective in the typical male behaviour that show that he is definitely not into you, and the gamut of excuses women provide to excuse such behaviours and attitudes. The book also contains the perspective of a single female who is torn between providing excuses for a man or seeing it as it is i.e he is just not into you.

With its witty, and catchy one-liners, it bears the same message i.e. If a man is into you, he'll pursue you, call you, want to see you, want to hang out with you, want to touch you, and definitely wanna call you his girl, kapish. If none of this is going down in your quasi-relationship, its simple i.e. 'He is just not that into you'.

What more can I say, call me jaded, bitter, or twisted, I just like to think the word 'realistic' applies.

With the euphoria of entering a New year now dried up and passed away, I am getting to the business at hand, diving into the spring/summer 2009 appearing in stores here and there.

I blogged about the Vivienne Westwood Anglomania shoe collection I saw at Pure last year and hinted about its juicy attractiveness. Well, it's here now and available in high-end stores and boutiques.

My love for these shoes is not exaggerated cos they are truly juicy, and absolutely gorgeous. It's made from plastic but this doesn't detract from its classy feel and look. They come mostly in Spring colours of yellow, baby blue and cream but you can get a pair of sandals from the Lady Dragon collection in Black.

Considering the fact that these are Vivienne Westwood shoes, they are quite affordable at less than £100 a pair but are selling out very fast.

Don't say I didn't warn you if you hesitate too long and miss out on some fab trends for this beautiful year of 2009. Go get yours.

It's the last day of the year 2008 and I can't help but hold my breath knowing that I'm stepping into another year.

I'm getting melancholic thinking of my roller coaster sort of ride through 2008 (some of my experiences have been spilt on these pages and shared with you all), and trying hard to file away in my memory chest (located in my head) the best of the Year 2008. There have been many moments of tears, and pain but my moments of joy, laughter, adventures, and true friendship have far exceeded them.

For some people, it is kind of hard to look back at 2008 for a number of reasons and for others, it's probably been the best year they have had.

The main news in 2008 has been the 'Credit Crunch' which took everyone by surprise and has left the financial world reeling with the shock of its impact. As of today, the Pound is at par with the Euro, something that has never happened since the euro was created, not a good way to end the year. Where do we go from here would be every one's next question.

Whatever the case, it is best to look forward with bated anticipation and high expectations because that's what life is all about, never predictable.

For me, this year has been my favourite for fashion, looks, and trends and I hope it continues into next year. In health and in friendship, I have been blessed and look forward to another year of physical fitness and great friends. In family life, we have come forward in leaps and bounds, and hope that next year rolls it forward even more. In love, I have had a few lessons and hope my strides get longer in 2009.

I am hoping that my readers take a cue from my thoughts and learn to love and accept all that has happened in 2008 and in turn, grab the excitement of another year with both hands because it is going to turn out well for all of us, you'll see.

I would be praying for great times of provision, blessing, laughter, fabulous health, amazing jobs, reasonable credit, great fashion, poignant and deep love, the best friends one can have and many more memories, for each and everyone of you. God never fails.

I look forward to many blogs falling off these pages and becoming the entrepreneur I aspire to be. What do you aspire to be? think about it, plan towards it and take steps in that direction.

Yours truly had to go see what the Clothes Show had to offer for 2008. My favourite part of the Clothes Show experience was the fashion show featuring an opening performance by the girl band 'The Saturdays'.

The Fashion show was a spectacle to behold (in a very good way) with the a general feeling of being at the Opera, Disco, and theatre all in one seating. It was truly beautiful and the clothes were amazing.

The designs were obviously targeted towards the Winter/Christmas festive season and the evening wear was my favourite range of the night. The colour theme was Black & White (except for the disco inspired designs featured as an aspect of the various collections).

I had a great time and I felt like stripping the clothes off the back of the female models especially the very beautiful, extravagant, and really rich-textured dresses.

I'll start off with my die-hard videos , the first one being the performance by the Saturdays and the remaining two are some parts of the fashion show. More will follow as I put them up. Hope you see something of the distant images.

African Witch Children Pt 1 (2008)

I am truly mortified by the contents of this documentary because it is a sad reality of Nigerian rural life and even a feature of the African continent. How can these people call themselves Christians?

I sit here watching this and think that this so-called Bishop is an ignorant murderer who claims that there are 2.3m witches/wizards in Akwa Ibom State, how did he come to reach this number? Did he undertake a census or something? The man is a thief.

This documentary has two angles to it. One issue is the impact of the acts of over-zealous religious fanatics prying on helpless kids. The other issue is the fact that the problem stems from deep cultural practices that would take conscious effort to exorcise from people who haven't been exposed to the modern world yet Nigerians would be generally branded as a race of murderers.

As a christian, I am sad that there are people out there killing and maiming in God's name and I wonder what I can do to help stop this cruelty which is overlooked by the government and law enforcement.

The killing Bishop's interview is a statement in itself on his murderous act and he should be prosecuted based on his words alone yet he is walking free and making loads of money. How is there still so much injustice in this world?

I grew up in Nigeria and always hated Helen Ukpabio's movies (and generally all those movies with an undertone of dark spiritual issues) because I reached a level of understanding of the Bible and a relationship with God that did not require scary and unrealistic tales of human beings having supernatural evil powers that could destroy me. And that's the issue here. People are being taught by all sort of prophets that the devil is manifested in all aspects of their lives including the gifts of God and this instigates people to begin to hate even the good things in their lives i.e their own children for no apparent reason other than everyday difficulties.

Even though the devil will try and take away our joy and happiness, God has never mandated any person on earth to judge another person and/or take their lives. Which Bible do these people read (we have to remember that some of these people are led blindly because they are not literate enough to read the bible themselves).

I think this is a good reason to begin to boycott movies that don't have a positive message or add any positivity to your lives.

Helen Ukpabio's aggression during her interview and non-composure was a clear sign of someone without a true conviction. She didn't make sense at all in everything she said and was clearly so defensive that she couldn't hold a logical or coherent conversation.

The main problem here is the fact that these beliefs and behaviour may have become deeply embedded in some areas of Nigeria and only God can turn things around and it can only be done by prayer. Not even the government or law can change people's psych and behaviour.

There has got to be some way to right some (if not all) of these wrongs committed.

I am traumatised after watching the documentary and in tears.

I'm sure everyone knows how much I've been looking forward to this even after attending the one in Lagos. I made my feelings clear on the Lagos leg of the event and hoped it'd be better in London, and it turned out to be worth the wait.

You know yours truly would give you the juicy goss from last night's ThisDay Music and Fashion Festival held at the Royal Albert Hall London and say it as it is. It was great fun and well worth it.

The event kicked off on time (no nigerian time going on) and was hosted by Trevor Nelson and a co-anchor.

With performances from Asa, Seal, Olu Maintain, Youssouf N'dour, and Christina Aguilera, it

was hard to seat still.

Colin Powell's inspiring speech on education and empowerment of the younger generation was
touching.

The Fashion show was my favourite part of the evening with collections from Momo, Lanre Da Silva & Jewel by Lisa, Deola Sagoe, Chris Aire, and Ozwald Boateng.

I loved the collection by Momo for its ethereal qualities. Soft fabrics, long hemlines and classy sophistication.

Jewel by Lisa's collection gave off an air of modern African femininity with lots of detailing on African fabrics. I would buy most of the pieces in the collection in a minute. Loved it. Go Girl.

Lanre Da Silva's Collection emerged to the thriller soundtrack (the headpieces worn by the models reminded me of the Thriller video).

Deola Sagoe's collection gave off a rock star vibe with ripped leggings, and t-shirts.

Chris Aire is a Jeweller to the the stars and his collection incorporated accessories and clothing with clean lines for the glamorous stylish person. Tyson Beckford more than made up for the entire collection by showing his abs and tattoos. Gorgeous man. Alek Wek's be-jewelled dress was a lovely sight to behold.

Ozwald Boateng seemed intent on maximising his time at the event because his introduction seem to be a production in itself and the fashion show was long with monotonous and repetitive movement from the models. The clothes were beautiful exuding an air of masculinity and references to the hunter instinct in a man i.e calf boots, country-style hunting jackets and caps all in dark colours of purples, blues, greens and a hint of pink and red. Loved the velvet jackets for the Winter.

His final bow was a show in itself.

I am breaking my month-old silence and hope you haven't all given up on me.

My spirits are lifted with the ThisDay Music and Fashion Festival taking place tomorrow night at the Royal Albert Hall (see if you can still get tickets and not miss a rocking night, "I hope"). I intend to be there and give you the juicy goss (if you couldn't make it) from my great view (as I have been told). I definitely need some cheering up so it had better be good (my sort of warning to the organisers).

There's a distinctive chill in the air all over the world not caused by the weather, but by the gloom and doom spread by the news on the capital markets and their downfall. I won't go into the mechanics of the predictions and statements made by financial experts and financial news but we definitely need a turnaround and soon.

Ironically, the weather's turned cooler and you need to be prepared for lower temperatures as you go about your day-to-day activities and travel. I am preaching thriftiness right now cos you have to get prudent with your finances in these unfortunate times. Keep your summer wardrobe functional with a few autumn/winter essentials thrown in here and there. As we head to the shops, grab your cardigan or coat and let's go.

Cardigans are a huge fashion statement right now as they can dress up an attire or dress down a formal outfit. Top picks for are:

Credit Crunch et all

Okay I'll be the first to admit it, the Credit Crunch is getting to me. Even though I haven't been investing in the sub-prime market (or any other market for that matter, well, maybe the store market lol), I still have to count the pennies.

So I stayed away from the shops and focused on optimizing my existing wardrobe (I know I need to wear some items a few times more) and increasing the turnaround time on the period taken to use my entire wardrobe. Of course, this hasn't been helped by the fact that I am staying below the radar and keeping my head down so I haven't been out much.

And as if things couldn't get any worse, all summer European banks have been folding up left right and centre, jobs are on the chopping block, mortgages are a no-go, and credit is a red bull to be avoided (I hope I am trying to convey a subtle message here).

So where's the fashion message here? Here it comes:

Revisit your entire wardrobe and make it work for you not vice versa. With the key trends for this Autumn/Winter season staying the same as last autumn/winter, this shouldn't be a problem (except if your entire wardrobe is more than two seasons old). Deep purples and black coloured clothing are still as strong as they were last year so it's all jolly to go. Short dresses, tights, leggings, and the ankle boots are still fashion statements rocking the streets and there's no season without the knee-length boots if that is what you prefer.

Go Bargain hunting. I revisited my old hunting ground H&M to see if I could shop on my budget and it felt nice to be able to pick essential winter pieces within my price range. Lots of online stores are still offering sale items even though the high street equivalent don't have any sales racks out.

Do a bit of updating with key pieces. You can buy key items which give a whole new meaning to your wardrobe like an all-in-one sweater which can be worn over any thing or a pair of boots that work with dresses, skirts, or trousers. You have to be creative and think outside the box to decide what look you want to be sporting all winter and find the key items that help you bag it.

If you were affected by the Lehman Brothers collapse this week, I would have to warn you to stay off the credit and get on the dole if you are eligible after all, that's what public welfare systems exist for. On the other hand, you might wanna trade in your expensive duds on eBay and live according to your current means. Whatever the case, I sympathise with those who lost their jobs and are left out on the street without any warning.

The Credit crunch isn't showing any sign of abating and oil prices are still rising through the roof, fashion isn't getting any cheaper but we all have to get wiser in achieving fashionable looks and style.

Diary of a Tired Black Man

This video touches on an issue that is age old but a current debate amongst black men and women. I was of the opinion it was mainly the case strictly between black American men and women however, I have recently seen otherwise.

As a Nigerian woman living in UK, I have become fascinated with the fact that at the centre of any discussion on relationships, men are of the opinion that Nigerian women in UK don't make it easy for a man to approach them hence the decision to seek associations with other races (not that this is a bad thing cos I would love to dabble in other racial pools wink, wink, offers invited).

At the best of times, the men who have expressed this opinion sound like the man in this video, tired of the drama of being led by the nose by women just wanting to mock them when they step up to the plate and approach them (this being their own opinion, don't shoot the messenger).

Well, it's come full circle now cos women are having to step up and take a man's place by doing the propositioning in order to get the attention they want from a fellow bruv i.e street for black man. When did it get to this?

I guess I have the prerogative of speaking my mind on this page all in the guise of blogging. THIS IS MY OWN DIARY OF A TIRED BLACK WOMAN, LOL.

August Bank Holiday - Whirlwind of Events

I'm back on this page after being away for a few weeks (I had technical problems and couldn't blog) but I have so much to catch you up on and I won't waste anytime getting started.

Summer has officially hit a snag and come to an end for us in UK. I look back with nostalgia at the last UK bank holiday and last when I see the videos of the Nottinghill Carnival and the photos from the Yettyd Fashion show held on the 22th of August.

Let's start with the Fashion show, there were collections from Yettyd, D'korum, De Angels Couture, Twynkle Loves and a few others.

A few pieces caught my eye and it was a good night out with the girls but a few things could have gone better i.e poor lighting does not help a fashion show and space was an issue (hey, space is always an issue in London).

I have to say kudos to these upcoming designers for their creativity and courage to step out and make a mark in the fashion industry. We look forward to seeing many shows.

I moved on to Nottinghill Carnival on Sunday and Monday. I had so much fun on Sunday with a lot of street gigs going on, a mellow and non-dramatic crowd and an ability to let all inhibitions fall (no shady thoughts please). However, Monday was another story altogether. It was overcrowded and there were no street gigs going on. After managing to find the Black Knights Entertainment gig for Nigerians, we could barely hear the music playing and there was certainly no feeling of letting all inhibitions go with the unfriendly crowd standing all around the street.

In an ironically hilarious twist, the Police shut down the Nigerian excuse of a gig while the Jamaican crowd were having a ball two streets away in a much bigger and carnival-like riot of a gig. I don't know what that says about our ability to throw a party (I always thought it was in our genetic make up to make a party happen, but apparently not). I don't mean to be a hater, I'm just telling it as it is (don't shoot the messenger and all that stuff).

Note to self, don't bother with the Monday version of the carnival, Sunday's the one to be at. have fun seeing some vids we caught of the Sunday event.

Sean Combs' A Raisin In The Sun Trailer

This movie is my fav of the week. It's close to my heart due to the inclusion of Nigeria in the storyline. Nigerian language, culture, history, and hardship is referred to over and over again and it's hilarious to watch.

Sean (pdiddy) Combs' acting skills surprised me and gave another insight into the musician and clothing label owner.

As always, I love to watch Sanaa Lathan in any movie.

I applaud David Oyelowo for his portrayal of a Nigerian Man (which wasn't too hard considering he is actually Nigerian) but in a manner that any Nigerian in the western world would identify with.

Anyway, if you live in UK, you'l have to buy your copy of the DVD from Amazon or Ebay, and in the States I'm sure you know where to get one.

Looks for Winter 2008 and Spring/Summer 2009

Winter 2008 is looking set to be fun with even loads more in store for Summer 2009 but let's focus on the current year.

Colour and Prints are still hot but with a hint of boldness and vivaciousness. They are here to stay with a variety of 'Candy shades' and 'Popsicle Colours' looking to be the consistent theme for accesories and handbags. At Pure, I had a look at the Kathy Van Zeeland (http://www.kathyvanzeeland.com/) collection and fell in love with the colours and brightness bouncing off the walls. These Hobo bags just hug the spotlight and bring you the stylish attention you certainly need.

Bright yellows and blues would certainly cheer up your winter chills and gloom.

For accessories, my hot fav is Annalou of London (http://www.annalouoflondon.com/) with their cheery and cheeky collection of bangles, necklaces, brooches and hair bands. They take colourful to a very stylish level and it certainly doesn't mater how old you are.

As for shoes, patent and plastic lead the movement for stylish statements. Vivienne Westwood is my fav 'must-look-out-for' with her anglomania collection for Mellissa Shoes. This was the highlight of my day at Pure and since I didn't have any pictures, I have to say thanks to Kirafashion.blogspot.com, for this.

The Anglomania Collection for Mellissa Shoes (http://www.melissaaustralia.com.au/) may not have been a favourite until now because these sandals certainly look delightful. The use of recycled plastic helps my eco-friendly conscience but the colours help my imagination soar well into fashionable depths. Can't wait to see thses on my feet, that's for sure.

A key tip for the winter would be to revamp your black items with a bit of colour here and there i.e pin a colourful brooch on your black turtleneck blouse or the lapel of your black coat, and you should be good to go.

Prints are bolder and bigger and definitely not heading off into the horizon, so don't be quick to pack your florals away cos you're definitely going to rock them a little bit more. Even with temperatures dropping, be sure to team your floral blouses with a colourful sweater from United Colors of Benetton (http://www.benetton.com/) and you won't miss a step. Their winter collection warms up my heart .

Naeto C is my 'King of Style', thanks to his'Kini big deal' video.

His brown (I think its light wool) tailored and fitted three-piece suit definitely shows a fashion leader (certainly not follower). The clean look gives the video an edge of class and style not currently seen in other music videos coming out of Nigerian Artists. His Ankara hoodie and neck scarf gave him some street cred, which every rap star needs.

The entire theme and wardrobe for the video was well-planned and came together in clear execution. Love, Love, Love this song and fabulous video.

Big ups to Naeto C and Rock on.

Who can step on to this game and claim the ' King of Style' crown (cos it ain't easy to bag).

This Day Music and Fashion Festival 2008 - The K! True Nollywood Story

I hate to be the one to burst the bubble but I haven't seen a full account or much publicity on the highlights of the This Day Fashion & Music Festival 2008 that took place in Nigeria on the 13th of July. I happened to be in Lagos Nigeria at the time and was at the event so I'm gonna blow the lid off the joint since I have a bone to pick with the organisers of the event. However, there's always a prelude to any event so read on.

I took off for a two-week holiday in Nigeria with my English friend. I hadn't been home in a few years and hadn't gotten a whole lot of fun the last time, so I was hoping for a fabulous time especially since I had a friend in tow, who also needed to see Africa in reality and not via the horrific reports in the media.

We landed and didn't have too much problems getting out of the airport (except for the woman barking orders at the passengers trying to get through passport control, like a headmistress at some school. Someone needs to tell her to get a grip). We stayed at a nice place called 'Villa Sofia' located in Omole Estate Ikeja (didn't fall for the usual cliche of staying on 'the island'). Loved the hotel so I gotta give some kudos to the owner for his hard work and efforts (it ain't easy running hospitality in Nigeria).

It was good to be back in Nigeria and catching Rhythm 93.7 and Cool F.M radio stations on the airwaves cos that's one of the things I missed the most whilst away, true talk. We caught wind of the 'This Day Fashion & Music Festival - Africa Arising' about to be held on Sunday and thought it would be a good idea to catch it (can't pass up the opportunity to catch Mary J. Blige) especially since it was for a good cause (trust me, I should have smelt a rat).

On the day of the event, we went fishing for tickets and it took a lot of phone calls and contacts to find out where the tickets were being sold (since when did it become the survival of the fittest to get concert tickets especially one that is meant to be for a good cause). We arrived at 'The Palms' (do you sense the dripping sarcasm in my tone) the sole venue for the sale of the tickets (which automatically sets the tone for the class/elitist profiling intended for the attendance of the event) and we were offered three ranges of tickets N10k (£42), N50k, N60k (okay I started choking after N10k). Who pays N50k/N60k a ticket (£211/£254) to see a show meant to raise the profile of the country? (believe me a lot of people bought these tickets) I couldn't even comprehend that entire families bought these tickets (and we know which families these are). Would the ticket salesperson have collected my money even if I had offered it without her being struck by lightening (I doubt she would have survived getting that money out of me).

Anyway, I survived the shock of the prices and stuck to cutting my coat according to my size (N10k tickets, especially since my friend was on hand to remind me the equivalent value in pounds) and thought I had managed to bag myself tickets to a concert at a convenient time (seeing as I hardly have time to indulge in such pleasures whilst in the UK). We arrived early to the venue of the concert and was greeted with a clear field and a marquee being set up at a far end of the Polo Club (I should have sensed the dodgy fact that the venue was an open field). An event scheduled for 7.00pm didn't make a move to start until 10.00pm (thank God for my smart move of sticking to vest top and flat sandals, I shudder to think how uncomfortable the wait would have been). At 10.00pm, we find that the attendees are being sorted into ticket types and the N10k are not worthy of getting into the Marquee and will be seeing the show (hearing the music is the operative word) outside the tent on the grass. I sat out on the field thinking it was a joke because there were no screens to view the performances on and there was a 10sec time delay on the speakers erected outside the tent. The evidence is right here before your very eyes:

We eventually get into the Marquee after some dubious and sneaky moves (see, they made me revert back to Nigerian form) and I get comfortable somewhere near the front enough to see what was going on (everyone was standing on chairs throughout the show). By the time the show got underway, N10K/N50K/N60K were rubbing shoulders and catching the same show (how ironic).

Mary.J.Blige rocked the crowd and I loved her gig (which lasted a long while, to be honest).

However, it got sloppy afterwards (as if the late start wasn't a signal) even with the tons of expatriates and foreign nationals teeming around trying to set up the stage. Basketmouth covered for the time delay but made it abundantly clear that he hadn't expected to compere for a long period of time hence some ensuing silence for another amount of time. It still took forever to get Chris Brown set up and performing. I wasn't impressed by the time he showed and I certainly wasn't bowled over by his gig. Moving on:

Chris Brown completes his set and we expected the Fashion show to begin as the interlude to the third performer (yet unconfirmed at this point). but another hour of inactivity goes by with sporadic spates of introductions and acknowledgements. Suddenly, a burst of activity and we get introduced to a designer, the American 'King of Bling' Chris Aire who is well-known for jewelry, showing us his clothing collection (he is Nigerian-born but we never knew until the event, how weird). I loved his all-white collection each item having an accent/detail of crystals and semi-precious stones (not sure if they are diamonds or diamante etc), very simple yet wearable. Covered the entire season of ruffles, pencil skirts, shirt dresses, studded bras/bikini tops (something for everyone really).

I got a little upbeat after that and came down with a slam when it took another hour to get anything to happen on-stage, and then Fat Joe arrives to take the trophy for the night in terms of entertainment and crowd control (absolutely smashed it). The Fashion show continued in the middle of the performance and even though I saw every collection that came out, I couldn't tell who was who at that point. It was hilarious that they tried to get him off the stage to continue the fashion show but he ignored whatever the plan was (thanks to him, he was the highlight of my N10k night).

At this point, it's 2.00am and my ancient bones start to ring the curfew bell so we decide to head off home. We hadn't seen any Nigerian acts as promoted at the start of the event and we certainly hadn't so much as heard anything about Tyson Beckford (my real reason for being there) or Naomi Campbell, both of whom had been touted for the event.

So these are my questions:

Should tickets have been sold at an astronomical price given the average earnings of a middle-class Nigerian? I can get over the N50K/N60K prices, it is beyond imagination cos even in UK and American, no-one pays £200 for tickets to a concert unless they are loaded and it is for charity (non of which apply in this case).
Should the event have been so poorly organised given the price of the ticket, and the number of foreign nationals running the event? In this case, no-one can say Nigerians ruined it cos the gig was being handled mainly by expatriates.
Should we have believed the event would have been any good considering the fact that the fashion show for the Abuja event was cancelled? The press kept that bit quiet until a few days after the Lagos show.
Who paid N50K/N60K for 3-16 year old kids to watch a fashion & music show at 10.00pm on a Sunday night (cos there were lots of very young kids in the audience)?
Why were there no new/upcoming talents promoted either for music or fashion to show the prospects in Nigeria. Why were the organisers touting established and successful designers (who can afford to pay for their own PR) as the face of Africa/Nigerian, we would have preferred fresh blood (and frankly affordable designers too). There was no Nigerian musician on stage until the wee hours of the morning because American musicians were given the key time slots where the audience were still awake.
The venue was appalling given the rainy season and the propensity for mosquitoes to feed on all and sundry during such weather conditions. The Polo club didn't quite make the cut.

I need to take a deep breathe and get off my high horse right now cos I got a lot for my N10k ticket, I wish I could say the same for the N50k/N60k ticket holders.

The Fashion was good but could be better with an injection of new talent and new names, there are designers out there who are making beautiful clothing. One of them is 'Tae' based in GRA Lagos, whose I just discovered and love for her contemporary style and attention to detail on African prints. Kudos to her and thumbs up.

I wish I had waited around to see 9ice but alas, it was not too be. My bed was calling.

Basketmouth was funny as usual so he gets the full thumbs up.

I might not survive the onslaught from this post so if you don't hear from me for a while, you know why. I am the voice of the streets.

Black in America - Is this different for black individuals in other parts of the world

I have been away on holiday in Africa for two weeks (juicy details of which will be posted here shortly). But as usual, I am here to give my opinion on things, some of which you may or may not agree with. It's worth a shot.

I stayed awake till 3.00am last night to watch the CNN Special Report on 'Black in America (the black woman & family)' (http://edition.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2008/black.in.america/) and it has sparked off a train of thought that has been lingering in my mind. Why does it seem like it's only the plight of black people in America that gets media attention cos black people in all western countries suffer the same plight of having to fight for an equal level of education, opportunity, and prosperity, health, safety, and freedom with other dominant races.

In UK, the newspaper headlines currently highlight this desperate fact mainly by the sudden increase in the number of knife-related and gang-related murder amongst black teenagers in recent times. If this isn't a clear sign of the level of poverty, lack of self-respect, deprivation, and lack of clear opportunities for these teenagers, I'm not sure what it is.

African kids are raised and trained to pursue an education yet they face serious challenges when pursuing career opportunities in the western world even at levels lower than their capabilities (what the heck is over-qualification as the recruiters call them?). They are treated like aliens from another world.

Basically, I am of the point of view that black people all over the world face the same challenges highlighted by the documentary i.e. high rate of single parenthood, dropping levels in educational opportunities, racial profiling, lack of high level employment opportunities, poor health facilities, low life expectancy etc.

What was poignant for me was the part covering black women and the difficulty of finding equivalent and eligible black men to have relationships with. The documentary hit the nail on the head 'strong successful black women are having a difficult time finding life partners in black men because their eligibility is below average' (I am not giving up hope, I'm just saying I am open to a variety of options and will not be sticking to black chocolate, white chocolate is also available.

Even funnier was the fact that some black women admitted to changing their hair styles in order to portray a certain image when pursuing job opportunities, that is hilarious if it is the case because I wear my braids and cornrows anyway I want irrespective of the organisation or company structure.

I loved the documentary and will be watching the second instalment tonight however, I hope it gives all black people the strength and inspiration to focus on developing their lives positively and not give them a reason to throw a self-pity party or carry a chip on the shoulder as a black individual.

It's about time - too long away

It's about time I get back to these pages, I've been away too long. What's been happening to you girls out there? Having a great summer in the sun showing off the 'pins' in shorty shorts, lovely shoulders and collar bones in beautiful strapless dresses, hourglass figures in pencil skirts and frilly tops, what's your own formula.

With a hectic schedule of work, socials, shopping, and everything else that comes with amazing weather and longer hours in the day, I haven't been as drawn to my computer enough to give you the goss on the streets. The Summer sales have begun and it's time to grab some bargains particularly if you have been disciplined enough to hold off on that one item you've been eyeing in the shops. Unfortunately , the lucky ones are the sizes 14 upwards cos the bargains to be had are on the current season's items (go get yourself some junk in the trunk and become curvy).

I have a few bits and ends to show you as my 'eye candy' in the shops. I am currently drawn to 'Warehouse' (http://www.warehouse.co.uk/) because they have pieces that work individually and look fantastic on any size or shape.

This slinky all-in-one jumpsuit is my absolute favourite because it gives a drapy silhouette on the body hiding any bags but giving emphasis to the curves a woman has. It's also funky and paired with a clutch and skimpy heels , good enough to head off into the night. With the high weather temperatures currently experience, the fabric would help with providing the coolness needed against the skin.

My next pick is a silk and stud pocket dress which has an appeal to me because of its pockets and stud detail. the next line is beautiful and the silhouette once again meets the current trend of not-so-tight dresses (a bit of space doesn't hurt). This is perfect for that special dinner date you're looking forward to.

Considering my love for daytime outings and socials, this silk bib dress is perfect for a summer day and looking fab is the code. If it gets chilly, a light cardigan draped on the shoulders gives a sophisticated look. Smashing.

I loved the Sex and the City movie and it's left me in the frilly layered mood, hence my next choice. Lace-tiered dresses are my current fave and this dress follows the style . Carrie Bradshaw has rubbed off on me and I am ready to take the world by storm (aren't you?)

I love structured dresses and this Miss Selfridge (www.missselfridge.com/) Victoria Dress which is a 2 for 1 combination of a skirt and frilly blouse gives the right spin to a great figure, fabulous. All girls with an hourglass figure need to grab hold of this, fast.

I can't get away from the white and black basic dresses that have graced the windows of stores everywhere. I love this H&M (http://www.hm .com/) Monochrome dress and its simplicity is its beauty.

Phew, It feels good to be back here sharing my spoils with you. I have had a wonderful time catching up with you.

Don't forget to catch the movie 'Maid of Honour' featuring our very own McDreamy from Grey's Anatomy, and of course 'Sex and the City'. I am looking forward to catching 'Hancock' featuring Will Smith, 'Wanted' featuring James McAvoy and Morgan Freeman, and light-hearted 'Mamma Mia' featuring Pearce Brosnan. It's turning out to be an epic summer, must enjoy.

I am going incognito for a few weeks as I go on holiday but I intend to have some stories to tell and amazing looks to show.

What's going on? Female Dignity's out of the window

I don't intend to be judgemental or condescending, and I certainly don't want to be judge and jury in my own court, but this blog came to mind as a logical deduction from a scenario that took place on a night out the other weekend.

It's really depressing sometimes to go out to the clubs and see the state of undress of some of my fellow sistas all in the name of 'fashion'. I always thought the whole essence of a night out is to get dressed up to the nines and show off your latest and trendiest duds not celebrate nudity and nakedness.Even the most enlightened and well-schooled females are guilty of showing off the crown jewels way before a bidder shows up on the scene.

As prudish as I may sound, I am not talking about the subtle act of showing a little cleavage or wearing a figure-hugging dress but the extreme cases where a dress is clearly not long enough to cover the bum or boobs are flopping out of the top half of an outfit in a gravity struggle, it just doesn't help female dignity or integrity.

Just the other day, a guy I know had the effrontery to tell me I have to show more boobs to get a man to show me some interest. What drug was he on? Or had he been drinking? Since when did a natural male-female relationship have to rely on the need to batter with nude human parts.

I hate to have to resort to being a a feminist to hammer my point home but I don't see any male parts on display on a night out or dangling out of control in any event so why does it have to be female parts on display. With women trafficking on the increase specifically for the sex trade industry, women need to take a stand on maintaining their modesty, pride, dignity and value. This is certainly not helped by a woman carelessly displaying her wares in order to elicit some provocative attention from a man (if that's the reason she dressed carelessly).

I have to say that this gives me serious food for thought cos I have to practice what I preach but I certainly don't know how comfortable it could ever be to have my bits falling out of my dress or the cold night air flushing me out under my skirt. Either way, it is not a pleasant thought.

This is my grief for the moment, and I leave you to ponder on this.

I am Ruffled this Summer

Since my love isn't currently manifested in a physical being, I 'll keep it investing in Fashion & Styling. I'm having a wonderful Summer so far (except for the odd chilly or rainy day here and there); the shops are brimming with wonderful cute dresses, skirts, and shirts; holidays are being planned; weddings are there to attend and celebrate, what more could I possibly ask for (duh, a man). Yet, my new job keeps hitting me harder and harder, each day with more projects, hence I barely have time to hit the shops or blog here. On top of it all, I have house guests who need attending to and entertained. This is all in a working day for the fashionista, it ain't easy I tell thee (said in a regional British accent adopted from my friend)

However, I am here to spread the word on fabulous looks that would help keep your summer rolling smoothly along and maybe trigger off the required level of romance you should be looking for or you are entitled to (yeah, what do I know about romance, look at my relationship status pleaseeeee, lol).

Anyway, a lot of designs this season have focused on certain themes such as the 'Grecian' theme with one-arm tops and dresses, 'Star' themes with star-spotted prints in all sorts of fabrics, and one which I haven't highlighted yet 'Ruffles'. An amazing amount of beautiful clothing are being sold all highlighting the 'Ruffle' theme and believe me, you can go wrong with any of the favourites I have picked (the deciding factor would be your 'Budget').

Jaeger's Purple Ruffle silk blouse is such a beautiful garment calling out in a loving whisper. The ruffled collar and puff short sleeve just do the job (you get the general idea).

Roberto Cavalli's (http://www.robertocavalli.com/) Olive Green oversized Ruffle Top falls in line with the theme and would do well with a white pair of trousers to give a fresh look at any evening event.

This one-arm Ruffled Dress by Lanvin (http://ww.lanvin.com/) is sleek and pretty in a chocolate brown colour giving a subdued sexiness.

This simple cream blouse by Miss Selfridge (http://www.missselfridge.com/) works for a daytime look to the office or getting around with you daily routines. Simple and nice.

Jumpsuits are back again but in softer fabrics and accented by feminine features to make them appeal to all. This crepe Ruffle jumpsuit by SEA NY (http://www.sea-ny.com) with its ruffled front tugs at my heart and alas, I have to share it with you.

If all the piece above are beyond you, the high street meets your needs quite well. New Look (http://ww.newlook.co.uk) has these two ruffled tops I absolutely think are a must-have and a best-buy. The snake print top works well for the evening look and the white ruffled shirt looks good beneath a suit jacket for the formal look or even beneath a tuxedo jacket.

'Stomp', 'Buy my Wardrobe', and 'Asha' - All in a Weekend 's work

My BF arrived in Town on Thursday and with a bang, my social calendar came alive. Thanks to lastminut e.com, I was able to get discounted tickets to see 'Stomp' at the Ambassador Theatre in the West End, on Friday night. Stomp is a truly colourful music & dance production. Everything imaginable was used to make music i.e. brooms, metal bins, tubes, nylon bags, match boxes, plastic buckets and drums. It is a must-see for the theatre connoisseur.

Saturday morning heralded and the plan was shopping, shopping , and more shopping especially with the opportunity to attend the 'Buy my Wardrobe' event where you can get designer names and brands at knock-off prices because someone is looking to sell the contents of his/her wardrobe.

Walking around the room at the event, it was truly amazing to see designer gear in the form of shoes, bags, belts, clothing, jewelry, make-up brushes and tools etc. It makes financial and prudent sense to sell off items you no longer want that can be of use to other people. This is where the whole 'vintage' era arises from because you can lay hands on discontinued items or past styles or pieces that can work very well for you in the present time. A lady in particular had a rack full of corsets from Gucci so on. I saw a few Chiffon and Lace dresses I would have loved to buy but alas, they weren't my size. With the permission of some of the vendors at the event, I have a few snapshots to share, to give you a general idea of the event.

I left with some beautiful leather belts and a pair of BCBG shoes so believe me when I say, there are some finds to be had.

As for Monday, Asha's gig at the Carling Academy in Islington was the one stop to be at and of course, yours truly was there. I was impressed and I am a converted fan for life. She is truly gifted and she has a great voice.

I am recovering from the full weekend and wondering what's next on my itinerary but I'll be sure to let you know. Until then, have a fabulous weekend and don't hesitate to love yourself cos God loves you.

More Asha for you

I had the opportunity of attending the Asha concert at the Carling Academy in Islington London and I was definitely converted. I had not really heard a lot of songs on her album (I posted a youtube video on her song 'Fire on the Mountain', and that's all I've had on her) and I love the 'Bibanke' remix done by Outtatown Entertainment so I needed to be at the concert the gig to get a first hand experience. She has a definite gift of captivating and holding an audience and her 'improv' (improvising) on songs were spot-on. I would definitely give the gig a '10*' rating, amazing performance and unbelievable talent. Kudos to our own home-made star. Big Ups to you.

Picks of the Week - Prints flood Spring, Summer and even Fall 2008

I promised I would be back to showcase some of my favourite prints out in the stores and it was no mean feat bring you all these few pieces.

Prints are a key feature of the year 2008 already seen in stores for Spring/Summer yet still a highlight of the Fall 2008 collection previews. Speaking of Fall 2008, my favourite collections were Versace and Roberto Cavalli. Roberto Cavalli is usually synonymous to animal print but believe me, his floral prints were amazingly beautiful and are guaranteed to give a fierce yet soft look. As for Versace, Donnatella's collection was a radical departure that gave me a new perspective on the luxury brand which I never gave a thought to in the past. If only I had the big bucks to go a-spending.

Anyway back to my level, the high street stores are doing well in meeting our fashionable and tasteful needs and major props need to go to New Look and Dorothy Perkins cos they are dominating my fashion charts right now in terms of affordable up-to-date and current trends. They are doing very well and kudos to them.

Get out your gladiator sandals in golds, greens, blues, reds, and even orange, and get out there strutting your stuff with the confidence of someone who knows how good she looks. My next choice is a tiered print dress and it's very flimsy, whimsical, and definitely oozes fashion forwardness (if that's you, don't hold back, go get one).
I am most proud of these next two pieces because they capture a part of my native African culture. Prints are a huge part of the Nigerian culture (from which I gladly hale) and it is with such pleasure that I capture the inspiration in these two skirts and pick them as part of my favourite pieces in the store. Alright, your miss blogger here hasn't had the luxury of blogging time she had a month ago but then change is a good thing so I ain't complaining.

However, I thought I might just sneak in some catch news and gist from yours sincerely. I haven't had a great movie blow me out of my socks so my movies of the month will have to wait a while (you might wanna catch 'Leatherheads' featuring George Clooney, not a bad start). I am definitely ecstatic that 'Gossip Girl' is back on our TV screens, I missed the xoxo sign-off line.

On the fashion scene, prints are popping up everywhere, in light fabrics that just inspire you to change your entire wardrobe, I'll be sharing a few of my favourite pieces in a few days (let's just say I'm still on the verge of joining the dating websites so a few dramatic pieces will come in handy for going on a few dates). I had a question on my last post asking if I would date an older man, and my answer to you would be 'Don't knock it till you've tried it, age nothing but a number.' Who's asking anyway, please identify yourself (just as long as you're single).

I might not have to join the dating websites if something imaginative comes up (can't think what that is). I still haven't turned up to my boxing lessons, so don't be scared of approaching me, I'm not harmful or dangerous, just eccentric and outgoing, ha ha.

I started working with a new employer and I'm still trying to find my feet so please bear with any short absences from this page, blogging is still a love albeit second place for a bit.

Experiencing a dry spell

Alright, I put my hands up and declare that the drought is getting to me. I haven't felt like going out in a while and I haven't particularly put myself out there, however I really do need some excitement around me.

I may have to resort to extreme measures (yeah right, what would that be?) Anyway, I'm really going to have to experiment a little i.e trying online dating. It might mean meeting a lot of people in other countries and from other cultures, or it could be someone next door I never met whilst out and about. After all, it's no different from matchmaking or blind dates as organised by friends and relatives.

Seriously though, many people think online dating is for the desperate (it might very well be) but it also means unlikely people get to meet each other where their paths may never have crossed. I've heard some success stories from people who have met online and they are certainly no different from meeting someone through friends or at a social event. I guess I feel the need and urge to extend my boundaries and explore all that's out there to see and meet with. I Joined an American Christian online dating site last year, for a few months, and didn't meet anyone but that's not going to dissuade me. I might just have my Prince Charming out there waiting for me to get online. I wonder if there are any key tips I need to know before my foray into the land of online dating? I'll definitely be watching out for any suspicious activity around me cos we all know the dangers out there in the e-world.

I stand for the women out there who haven't found true love yet they are emotionally, physically, and mentally ready for the ultimate commitment to the right guy. This isn't because they are 'too picky', 'have a list', or whatever terms are associated with single successful women, the true be told, it's because it just hasn't happened. If the right man comes along, bang! the deed is done, soul-mates are found and the rest is history.

I need to really rant off on the judgemental people out there who feel it's up to them to be judge and jury on the relationship status of single women. It isn't as easy as it's made out to be to find true love, and it isn't any easier to keep the flame of love burning. But I don't know which is worse, being told you're getting old and need to marry the next person who comes along just to meet some archaic notion that age should determine your relationship status, or being told that you are not good enough just because you haven't met your soulmate. That's utter rubbish and nonsense, your emotional and mental state of mind is as important in meeting and keeping a relationship as sharing a bond and attraction to the person you want to spend the rest of your life with. In addition to that, the laws of chemistry come into play so no matter the number of people you meet, you will only truly pursue a relationship with the person you share a chemistry with and have a lot of beliefs and principles in common.

I will sign off on this note, my words are my weapon and means of sharing my feelings and opinions as I ride the tide of life. If (and the operative word being 'if') I go ahead with this so-called foray of mine I'll be sure to keep you posted with my success or lack of success. Any suggestions are welcome, by the way. CNN Reporter taking a driving lesson in Lagos

As old as I am, I get embarrassed when I have to explain that I don't drive because I don't know how to. However, taking into consideration the fact that I schooled away from home all my life and never had a need to learn how to drive because I knew I didn't own a car and wouldn't have had access to a car, it was never a priority.

Living in UK, the scenario hasn't changed much because there's a fairly dependable public transport system coupled with the fact that I haven't found time to fit in driving lessons in between work and leisure. What else can I say?

However, I decided to try my hand at learning how to drive whilst on holiday in Nigeria two years ago. I started my journey by trying to locate a driving instructor in my area and found a guy who would teach me using a Volkswagen Beetle (the trademark vehicle for driving lessons in Nigeria). It wasn't a rundown vehicle at all, but it certainly wasn't the modern version of a vehicle. I had to enlist the help of some pillows to boost my height at the steering wheel because the seats were sunken into the vehicle and in addition to that I had to constantly pull the seat forward behind me cos the backrest was literally almost the backseat. After a few lessons, I got a handle on how to move the car, drive up and down a side road, reversing, and turning (not bad at all).

With the memory of that holiday still firmly on my mind, CNN's piece on driving in Nig was a walk down memory lane. My flatmate called me at work to inform me about the piece, urging me to catch it (and since I work in a media company, I could) . All I can say is , I certainly had a better driving lesson experience than the CNN reporter. I didn't have to push the car I learnt with and I certainly didn't have a flat tyre experience. The video report was funny yet it wasn't funny at all because these pieces tend to highlight the need for development in Nigeria but on the flip side, it can create a cynicism in some people's minds about the need to avoid Nigeria.

It's a double-edged sword to see these reports about Nigeria on CNN. But as dangerous as it is to drive in Nigeria, it is certainly no less dangerous driving in UK going by the statistics churned out. Dangerous Driving is one of the biggest problems faced in UK.

World Autism Awareness Day - Reflections on the Week

April 2 is known as 'World Autism Awareness Day' and throughout the week CNN has been showing insightful and really touching stories on the issues surrounding Autism all over the world, see http://edition.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2008/news/autism/.

In recent years, apart from Aids, Poverty, and natural disasters, Autism has become one of the leading biggest issues facing kids around the world. In many countries, it is still considered a stigma and parents don't have the support needed and required to help these kids lead a fulfilled life like any normal child.

Having grown up around some Autistic kids, I look back now and see with more knowledge and information, the difference that could have been made if it had been made clear that an Autistic child isn't cursed or mentally unfit. These children are just like any other child except for the fact that they require different care and attention to help them become socially inclusive and able to communicate in their own way. The families of Autistic children face a lot of challenges to love their children unconditionally and provide the required care and medicines to help them grow up up in the best way possible. Any family with an Autistic individual that manages to keep it all together considering the lack of support from the government, health care system and people around deserves a heroic award because it is not an easy road to take.

As an African, I know for a fact that it is not well publicised nor given the priority it deserves but I hope the awareness given in USA and UK spreads to Africa because there are lots of Autistic kids in the Continent (knowing a few myself) because at the moment (in my opinion) the word 'Autism' does not make the rounds even where the symptoms are as clear and distinct as they can be.

The earlier the diagnosis, the better the quality of care the child can be given to get a head-start on a normal life given the circumstances. Early autism screening is advised as soon as the child begins to show signs of little or no speech, delayed speech, lack of eye contact or lack of interaction (http://www.paains.org.uk/Autism/traits.htm). If you are worried, go online and do your research. If there is no support system in place in your country, there's information online on the steps you can take to help your child in your own small way, get online. Don't give up on your child and don't give up on their development into normal albeit creative individuals.

If you are able to make a difference in your immediate surroundings, go ahead and raise the awareness of 'Autism'. It is not a cause for discrimination, stigmatisation, or ostracising of these children, they require your consideration, compassion and love just as any other human being.

Look around you and become more aware of these issues around you, don't bury your head in your in the sand.

Okay, I know I don't particularly cater for the Boys in my Posts but I have to let them know the Movie they need to go see right now. It's a bit extreme because it's based on the world of fighting and mixed martial arts (Let's just say I am mentally preparing myself for my boxing classes and I have some aggression to let out). The movie to see is 'Never Back Down', it's quite intense and you might have to wince here and there when you see some of the fight sequences but overall, it gives you an idea of how best to handle peer pressure, aggression, anger, and heartache. It's definitely a 'must-see'.

For the girls, I have to say that I haven't been excited by 'all' trends in one season as I am right now. This Spring/Summer 2008 seems all set to be a bang in terms of fashion, clothing, and style. There is so much encompassed in this one season, that you'll all be spoilt for choice.

Dresses are still hiking further up the hemline (I love short, short, short) and there's so much colour around that there's no excuse to choose black (except it's the only colour available for the style or there's a Wake/Funeral to attend.

In addition to this elements, there's an even sassy/sexy vibe to consider and it's called the 'one-arm dress/one-shoulder dress/one-strap dress'. The one-shoulder dress (my favourite term to use) is reappearing on the scene this spring/summer season to make the girls enjoy showing off necklines and beautiful shoulder blades. There's nothing stopping you from showing off your elegant neck-to-shoulder features, all you need is a well-structured strapless bra (please don't be stingy here, it's important that it is a good one to hold the 'babies' in place). For your viewing and inspirational pleasure, you will find some of my favourites:

This beautiful chiffon piece is so heavenly, i could grab it off the screen right now. Bebe (http://www.bebe.com/) has got it just right with the print chiffon and ruffles giving it a soft appeal and the length making it appealing for a hot date with you man. Trust me, you'll be causing some heads to turn (just make sure you're wearing the right coloured under-garments, there's nothing that beats being tacky by wearing wrong-coloured underwear and baring all in a chiffon apparel).

I love this one-shoulder piece by Mango (http://www.mango.com/) because it well-cut to have the classy look yet capture the trend having a shoulder bared for a feminine flirty effect. it's the dress to have for a formal occasion where everyone needs to know who's the centre of attention. You need a beautiful pair of shoes for this and please don't let it be chunky, masculine -type shoes. It should follow the theme of the dress, dainty/strappy/very feminine.

I love 'As seen on Stars' (http://www.asos.com/) for their version of the one-shoulder dress. It's still the same theme of light fabrics, dark colours but with a little bit of bling inserted at the waist, very pretty too.

On a fashionable nite, I have to say I havent been impressed by Leona's outfits since she's been out and about on the Red Carpet. I can't seem to identify her personality or identity in the way she dresses. Catch-up on Vids, Trends, & Yours Truly

I am on a high right now from watching and loving 'Step up to the Streets' which is the sequel to 'Step Up'. That's what we're talking about when it comes to dance movies. The first movie was good enough but the second movie is even better. Another sweet movie to see is 'Penelope' which is a feel-good movie and one for the young ones (who says I'm grown up?). Can someone tell the TV Executives to bring back 'Gossip Girl' cos I'm suffering withdrawal symptoms. In the meantime, 'Cashmere Mafia' stills makes my day.

It's been quiet here for a few weeks, not for lack of something to write (believe me, I always have something to say) but I thought I'd give everyone a bit of space and time to enjoy some peace and quiet. I wish I could say the same for myself because I certainly haven't had much quiet but I wouldn't go so far to say peace has eluded me.

I had a rocky start to last week when I got the news that my mum was assaulted, something I never thought could happen to someone close to me. However, it has made me realise the true importance of self-defence hence, my foray into the world of boxing. Watch out all, you just might see me on your sports pages bagging some under-weight boxing championship (never going to happen).

Anyway, it is with much excitement that I remind you that days are lengthening and nights getting shorter, which is an obvious sign of the turn in weather and sunnier days to come. And with this change in temperature and season is the switch in colours for the forthcoming months. So, without further ado, I present you the colour 'Purple'. 'Purple' is the new 'Pink' this Spring/Summer season ranging from light purple to dark purple on the colour palette (my friend's favourite is 'Aubergine' which is not hard to come by this season considering Vera Wang has a beautiful dress in 'Aubergine' that we couldn't take our eyes off it).

This jumpsuit from Bebe (http://www.bebe.com/) is what this season's all about. Flirty and girlish softness reminding you of the 1970s when nipped waistlines and legs were the highlight of the era. This piece should bring the fun you've been missing back into your summer.

This frilly blouse from Miss Selfridge (http://www.misselfridge.com/) should have no problem helping bring back some of the girly laughter you've been missing.

This silk camisole dress by Ducie (http://www.ducie.co.uk/ and available at Portabello Market) is pretty and its simplicity would portray your feminine beauty just wonderfully well.

Back with a Bang - A Peek at Denim for Spring/Summer 2008

For those of you who give a care in the world about what I have to say on 'what to wear' and 'where to get' cute frocks and outfits, I'm sorry I haven't been paying that section much attention. It's not for loss of interest or a lack of items to show, it's just been a hectic few first weeks of the year.

However, I am back with a bang and pleased to inform you that something else is back with a bang for the spring/summer season (drum rolls please). Yay (a favourite expression of a girlfriend of mine), it's light denim in all forms of garments. I will be giving you an highlight my favourite denims garments (some of which I will try to lay my hands on) for the forthcoming spring/summer season.

Miss Selfridge gives a feminine feel to clothing which I love and they are a favourite of mine for dresses and tops hence my first round of choices from the store. I'm sure you're all tired of hearing me go on about my love for dresses so I'll move on without further ado. This denim collection from Miss Selfridge (http://www.missselfridge.com//) all fall into my top 5.

This dark blue balloon denim dress has a somewhat masculine upper bodice with a flared lower half but with the nipped waist, it ultimately brings out the feminine feel. love it, love it, love it for the woman with attitude and an unconventional style. The last two season have turned away from figure-hugging clothing to free flowing silhouettes (so please stop assuming i'm pregnant just because i'm wearing a free flowing garment, it's not Maternity wear).

Short dresses stay on this spring/summer and this chambray dress gives the casual, playful edge to any woman. Collarless shirts, dresses and tops are a highlight of spring/summer 2008 so be prepared to see more collarless clothing.

My third choice is this adventurously short skirt which would make a great display of your 'Pins' (that's what summer's all about afterall). The bubble hem is still on for another season hence its appearance on this item of clothing. Teamed with a singlet top, the beach is a go and teamed with a chiffon blouse, any party's your destination.

Number 4 on my list is for the ladies who love their denim trousers, High-waisted, wide leg jeans are a main commodity for the spring/summer 08 season, but another necessity is the skinny flare jeans which is making a dramatic entrance in all clothing stores. Of course, Miss Selfridge has this too.

Pick of the Month - TV, Movies & Vids

You'll probably all sigh for me if you found out that I now have my favourite updates on the move via video and radio Podcasts on my ipod. I have Fashion Week podcasts, NBA & Basketball podcasts (the big news being the loaning of Shaquille to the Phoenix Sun from Miami Heats), Larry King podcasts (you should see Snoop Dogg on Larry King, hilarious), Sermons from my old church, and MTV News. This is all in addition to TV and Movie (how on earth do I keep up? don't ask)

So the last time I wrote you all on the movies to note, I went on and on about how I was looking forward to seeing 'How she move', the result of which is an absolute anticlimax. Other than the true athletism of the main character in the movie, I certainly didn't feel the urge to take up stepping (it's not like I have the opportunity to, considering my age and country of abode). When compared to 'Stomp the Yard', there still isn't any all-raving dance movie out and I hope that changes soon (It would be nice to have another equivalent of 'You've been served').

Some other movies have had the same anticlimatic effect i.e. 'Over her dead body' but '27 dresses' and 'Juno' managed to give me a smile. I started watching 'First Sunday' but since I haven't finished it, I don't have a verdict.

I had to dig into the movie archives to find myself a movie to restore my faith and I found 'Biker Boyz' featuring Laurence Fishburne, which was quite good.

TV is still ruling the day with the complete fourth season of 'Run's House' putting Rev Run (of Run DMC) in my top list of 'Fathers I wish I could borrow for a day'. 'Cashmere Mafia' giving me an insight into the confusing world of successful women who still have dilenmas in their day-to-day life (they sure know how to wear quirky fashion and look great). I miss Gossip Girl and can't wait for the end of the Writers' strike (imagine me, it's not even in my country of abode and I am pleading for them to stop). On the other hand, Snoop Dogg's Fatherhood is just as entertaining. Watching the 'Grammy Awards' was okay but not end-moving but 'Live on the Red Carpet' wasn;t to be missed, I'm my own Fashion Police.

'American Idol' is back for another season and I know I won't be trying out even if I was paid to (but can someone tell some other people not to either). Hollywood week is about to begin and the going is gonna get tough for the candidates, I'll be sure to root for my favs.

What more can I tell you? I have a life other than watching TV so I'll leave you now.

Countdown to Valentine's Day - One Week to go

I have thrown myself into giving tips about Valentine's day to the extent that I need to reiterate that I am being sort of hypocritical cos I won't be joining in the celebrations (not for want but for a lack of willing co-participants) so don't be hard on me if you found out afterwards since I've openly declared it and given you an open disclaimer. With this in mind, I certainly hope and pray that I'll be joining the celebrations sometime in the future if not sooner.

It occurred to me that there might be a misconception that Valentine's day is only for intimate lovers. Well just so you know, it isn't. It's a celebration of love on all levels for friendships, crushes, romantic aspirations, intimate & meaningful love, and rekindled love i.e. your friend can be your Valentine if only to remind one another of your love for each other as friends.

Hence, regardless of my lack of an intimate & meaningful Valentine (considering the fact that the 'Hot Girls' are always my valentine whether I say it or not), it doesn't end for me cos I intend to spend my Valentine's Day with the lover of soul, the utmost true love of my life, God.

Please bear this in mind, if you don't have a Valentine it's not the end of the world and it's not a slight on your person. It just means that you have one less person to declare and reiterate your love for. You still have your other potential Valentines i.e. your family, friends, and your God. When your soulmate comes along, there's just one more person to love, cherish, and behold, and you'll be able to handle it all.

So if you don't have plans for Valentine's day, why don't you send a Valentine's card to your family and friends reminding them of your love for them. Also, use the day to declare your love to God. In addition to all of this, book a dinner date with your closest available friends and have a rocking time, wilding out on this special day. It's all good.

I would always recommend Mexican and Italian food on Valentine's day cos you need passionate food on a day like this (only joking albeit serious).

What else can I say to you all? Love one another like you love yourself and remember that you are all beautifully and wonderfully made, let no one tell you different.

Don't let anyone define what love should be celebrated and which love shouldn't, love is love and should all be celebrated on Valentine's day. Enjoy yourselves and drink sensibly. As an aside, I wonder what statistics have to say about the number of babies made on Valentine's night (Come on Kaffy, focus).

Also, don't drink and drive, take a cab.

Each theme has an appropriate gift i.e. Chocolates would be appropriate for platonic but sweet, romantic dinner at a dance bar would be appropriate for a first declaration of love, home-cooked dinner with love songs playing in the background and a gift of exquisite lingerie would be appropriate for a steamy affair (note my previous caveat), and personalised picture frames would be appropriate for young love.
